Setting – Israel rallied together to fight against Benjamin because of the killing of the Levite concubine.
Content – Israel gathered together to find out what was the reason for the Levites message. He explained what happened. Israel’s response was to fight against Benjamin, (v. 8), “Then all the people arose as one man, saying, "Not one of us will go to his tent, nor will any of us return to his house.”
Israel asked the city of Benjamin to hand over the ones who committed the sin (v. 13), “Now then, deliver up the men, the worthless fellows in Gibeah, that we may put them to death and remove {this} wickedness from Israel." But the sons of Benjamin would not listen to the voice of their brothers, the sons of Israel.” This response led to civil war.
Many men of Israel died, 22,000 the first day, 18,000 the second. God approved them going against Benjamin (v. 18). Each time men fell, Israel cried out before the Lord. The third time the Lord said that He will give Benjamin into Israel’s hand. Israel still loss men, but this time they were victorious over the Benjamites, where 25,000 of them died.
Verse 48, “The men of Israel then turned back against the sons of Benjamin and struck them with the edge of the sword, both the entire city with the cattle and all that they found; they also set on fire all the cities which they found.”
Application – Even within family lines sin affects all. Later Israel grieves over the death of their Benjamite brothers. But the tribe of Benjamin didn’t deal with their sin. Here again we see the degradation of Israel due to their sin, it lead to civil war. This civil war led to the death of 65,000 warriors.
Our sin affects all, especially our family. We need to realize that sin’s affects us and others.
