Setting – Paul letter opens with the establishment of who sent him and the reason for Christ death and it being God’s will.
Content – Paul starts his letter by defending his mission mandate that he was sent by Christ as the other apostles were and not by an agency of men. This is the only letter where he specifically addresses it to Churches, rather than a region or group.
He opens his letter clearly establishing that God raised Christ from the dead, God is our Father, Christ’s death was to ‘rescue us from the present evil age’, and that Christ death was part of God’s will. Because of what God has done He is to receive glory (v. 5), “forevermore”.
Christ (v. 4), “gave Himself for our sins”; He was the final sacrifice.
Application - God created us in order to show us His great love. Even though we disobeyed Him, His will was to show how great a love he had for us by offering His son as the sacrifice to remove our sin. The Old Testament sacrifices for shadowed this final sacrifice of Christ. Romans 5:8, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
This salvation is what drove Paul’s mission. For the Galatian’s, Paul wanted to right incorrect doctrine that had diverted them from the truth.
We should have the same passion for the truth and the ‘mission’ to build God’s church motivated by God’s great gift given to us.
