Setting – Gabriel outlines future events to Daniel.
Content – Gabriel provides Daniel great detail of each conquering event, such as (v. 2 NLT) “Now then, I will reveal the truth to you. Three more Persian kings will reign, to be succeeded by a fourth, far richer than the others. Using his wealth for political advantage, he will stir up everyone to war against the kingdom of Greece.” Because of this some scholars believe that Daniel (or at least these future event chapters) where written after the event took place, but I don’t believe that to be true. Many kingdoms rise and fall all the way until the end of the time where the anti-Christ will reign, (v. 21 NLT) “The next to come to power will be a despicable man who is not directly in line for royal succession. But he will slip in when least expected and take over the kingdom by flattery and intrigue” But he too will eventually fall from power (v. 45 NLT) “He will halt between the glorious holy mountain and the sea and will pitch his royal tents there, but while he is there, his time will suddenly run out, and there will be no one to help him”
Application – Great events and kingdoms are outlined in this chapter. But each great kingdom is shown to eventually fall. At the end, the anti-Christ will reign and control, deceive and conquer nations. But he too will fall. During each and every event all died. Those who are God’s will rise to an everlasting life, but others not (Dan. 12:2 NLT) “Many of those whose bodies lie dead and buried will rise up, some to everlasting life and some to shame and everlasting contempt.”
Good and bad events in history will take place, but God wants us to be faithful to Him through them all. While it’s not and easy task, we must remain focused on God and His eternal purpose, even during distressing times.
