Setting – How God’s creation won’t enter into His rest
Content – God has a place of rest for His creation (v. 4b ESV) “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.” This rest is for us as well, (v. 10 ESV) “for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his” Our goal should be to enter this rest (v. 11 ESV) “Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience”
God has stated that some don’t enter into this rest (v. 3 ESV) “As I swore in my wrath, 'They shall not enter my rest” Disobedience prevents one from entering (v. 6b ESV) “and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience” This rest was not the Promise Land (v. 8 ESV) “For if Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that”
So (v. 1-2 ESV) “let us fear if, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you may seem to have come short of it. For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also; but the word they heard did not profit them, because it was not united by faith in those who heard” This word of God (v. 12 ESV) “is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” The word (Bible) is what will help determine if we fall short and it will help to “judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart”. We can’t hide our disobedience from God either (v. 13 ESV) “And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do” If we do fall, (v. 15-16 ESV) “we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses. Therefore, let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
Application – If we want to enter God’s rest, we need to be obedient to His commandments. In order to know His commands we must be in the “word” (Bible). Because the word is able “judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart”. We can deceive ourselves into thinking we’ve arrived and we will enter His rest, and this deception is likely to occur unless we are exposed to the “word” (Bible).
