Setting – Chapter 1 establishes who Christ was (is).
Contents – God first spoke to His creation through prophets (v. 1) “God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways”. But later He spoke to His creation through Christ (v. 2b) “in these last days has spoken to us in His Son”. Christ is the exact representation of God (v. 3a) “And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature” and Christ has taken the seat of honor (v. 3b NLT) “After he died to cleanse us from the stain of sin, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God of heaven.” Because of this position, Jesus rank is far above angels (v. 4 NLT) “This shows that God's Son is far greater than the angels, just as the name God gave him is far greater than their names.” Because God didn’t address any of His angels, such as (v. 5) “YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU"? Further more, (v. 6) “And when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says, "AND LET ALL THE ANGELS OF GOD WORSHIP HIM.” the angels are to worship Him.
Jesus rank or purpose was (is):
- v. 8 “But of the Son {He says,} "YOUR THRONE, O GOD, IS FOREVER AND EVER, AND THE RIGHTEOUS SCEPTER IS THE SCEPTER OF HIS KINGDOM.”
- v. 9 “YOU HAVE LOVED RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HATED LAWLESSNESS; THEREFORE GOD, YOUR GOD, HAS ANOINTED YOU WITH THE OIL OF GLADNESS ABOVE YOUR COMPANIONS."”
- v. 10 “YOU, LORD, IN THE BEGINNING LAID THE FOUNDATION OF THE EARTH, AND THE HEAVENS ARE THE WORKS OF YOUR HANDS;”
- v. 12 “AND LIKE A MANTLE YOU WILL ROLL THEM UP; LIKE A GARMENT THEY WILL ALSO BE CHANGED. BUT YOU ARE THE SAME, AND YOUR YEARS WILL NOT COME TO AN END.”
- v. 13 “SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET?”
The angels purpose (v. 14) “Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?”
Application – Hebrews quickly establishes the ranking of Christ compared to angels. God spoke through Jesus, was the exact representation of God, sat at the right hand of God (seat of honor), is to be worshiped by the angels and he established the earth.
Understanding who Christ is gives us correct perspective on how seriously we should be taking our lower position with him and choosing to be clothed in humility. God has appointed Jesus to a place of honor (right hand seat), further establishing His rank over creation.
