Galatians Summary

Paul addresses the false doctrine of following areas of the law. This was imposed upon the Galatians by Judaizers. Paul also included the time he confront Peter and Barnabas of this type of issue “If you, being a Jew, live like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how {is it that} you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?” Because, “a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus”.

Paul supports his argument that we are to live by the Spirit and not the law, given the example of Abraham “Abraham BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS RECKONED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS”, basically, “those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer.” So why the law then?

The law was established to point us to Christ, “Let me put it another way. The law was our guardian and teacher to lead us until Christ came” Because, “if a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law”

Living by faith offers freedom from the law “I plead with you to live as I do in freedom from these things, for I have become like you Gentiles were--free from the law”

Paul reiterates his reason for writing to the Galatians, “If you are counting on circumcision to make you right with God, then Christ cannot help you.” He warns them to “not {turn} your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh”, but with this freedom help and server one another. We can test to see if we are being lead by the Spirit or the flesh by reviewing our fruits again Galatians 5:19-26.

This issue of false doctrine was so important that Paul himself penned the letter to the Galatians, “See with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand.” He makes the condemning statement “But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned!”

False doctrine, that of adding to what is foundation, needs to be seriously dealt with. We can’t add to what the gospel of Christ is. Christ death set us free from laws and regulations that would need to be followed for our faith.
