Setting – God uses Gideon and 300 men, conquered the Midianites and Amalakites.
Content – God narrowed down the amount of solders to 300 men to fight the Midianites (and Amalakites). This was so that (v. 2), “In order that Israel may not boast against me that her own strength has saved her,” The Midianites and Amalakites numbers (v. 12), “The Midianites, the Amalekites and all the other eastern peoples had settled in the valley, thick as locusts. Their camels could no more be counted than the sand on the seashore.”
God encouraged Gideon by having him hear a dream of one of the Midianites (v. 14), “This can be nothing other than the sword of Gideon son of Joash, the Israelite. God has given the Midianites and the whole camp into his hands.”
Gideon and his men blew their trumpets, lit their torches and smash their clay jars, which startled the Midianites, which starting attacking and killing each other. Gideon summoned Naphtali, Asher and all Manasseh and those from Ephraim to chase after Midianites and Amalakites. They captured and killed the leaders Oreb and Zeeb.
Application – God doesn’t need us to show how He can fight the army, but He wants us to see His deliverance and His ability to deliver. Gideon fighting the Midianites shows how nothing is to big for God and using 300 men to defeat a massive army is nothing for God.
I only wish that I could rely on God as Gideon did. God can delivery me from far smaller issues, or those things I ‘war’ against. But I’m not always sure of which wars God wants to fight for me in. I can only trust the He will make known to me which is which.
