Setting – Joshua provides a summary of what the Lord had done for Israel, starting back from Abraham’s grandfather Nohar. Also the death of Joshua and Eleazar is recorded here.
Content – Joshua summary started with Nohar severing other god’s. But God (v. 3 NLT) “…took your ancestor Abraham from the land beyond the Euphrates and led him into the land of Canaan. I gave him many descendants through his son Isaac” From there he continued to Isaac, Jacob, Moses/Aaron, etc. stating again what God did to lead Israel to the Promise Land. Bringing them out of Egypt, across the Red Sea, victory over battles, crossing the Jordan River into where they inhabit now.
Joshua put before Israel the charge to serve God only (v. 14 NLT), “So honor the LORD and serve him wholeheartedly. Put away forever the idols your ancestors worshiped when they lived beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt. Serve the LORD alone” The people agreed to serve Him only (v. 24), “The people said to Joshua, "We will serve the LORD our God. We will obey him alone”” Then Joshua put their word to a permanent bind (v. 25 NLT), “So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day at Shechem, committing them to a permanent and binding contract between themselves and the LORD.”
Application – God was with Israel and lead them to the Promise Land; maintaining his commitment with Abraham and Moses.
Joshua continued the leadership of Israel from Moses and finished what God had commandment of him and Israel. Joshua, like Moses, saw the hand of God. Joshua not only saw the miracles during Moses’ time, but during his own. Joshua experienced the final deliverance of Israel to the Promise Land. Joshua leadership was greatly used by God to accomplish His will.
God can use me as a leader over my circumstances. I might be required to lead a nation, but I am responsible for what God has entrusted me to lead. I need to trust that God will fulfill His promise of blessings upon my descendants if we, but them and I, righteously follow His direction.
