Setting – Territory given to the tribe of Benjamin.
Content – The remaining tribes hadn’t been allocated their land. Joshua sent out surveyors to map out the land. Then (v. 8b), “Then return to me with your written report, and I will assign the land to the tribes by casting sacred lots in the presence of the Lord here at Shiloh.” William MacDonald in his commentary points out the Benjamin had a prime location, “it was the first campsite west of the Jordan were the memorial river stones were, it was the place of the first Passover in the Promise Land, the ruins of Jericho were viewable from there, etc. There land encompassed many evidences of signs of past, present and future blessings” In the future, Jerusalem will be established here.
Application – The sacred lots were the way for God to communicate to Joshua His will of who to allocate land to which tribe. We see that God is concerned for the establishment of territory for His people. Each tribe had it’s own place to call their own.
Even though this earth is not our home, God still has a place for us. A place that we are to call home (temporarily) and to live out our lives in honor, praise and ministry for Him, until we do come to our heavenly home.
