Setting – Moses has died and Joshua is talking over leading Israel across the Jordan. He prepares Reubenites, Gadites and half tribe of Manasseh for battle with Israel. Jordan is encouraged by God and the tribes of Reuben, Gad and half tribe of Manasseh to be strong and courageous.
Content – God spoke to Joshua saying that wherever their foot touches will be their land. God said (v. 5), “No man will {be able to} stand before you all the days of your life.” Three times, God tells Joshua to be strong and courageous, verse 6, 7 & 9. God also instructed Joshua to not let the book of the law department from his mouth for it will make his way prosperous and he will have success.
Joshua told Israel that they would cross the Jordan in three days.
Joshua assembled the warriors from the tribes of Rueben, Gad and half-tribe of Manasseh to help battle with the rest of Israel.
Application – Here we see that God is fulfilling His promise and bringing Israel into the Promise Land. But this won’t occur without crossing the Jordan and without having to battle. God provides His promises, but not always on a silver platter. Here we see Israel being promised the land, but they are still required to go to battle over it.
