Setting – Moses tells the people that they are to write all the commandments that he gave on stones and set them up on Mount Ebal. They were also to build an alter to the Lord there, where they were to offer burnt and peace offerings. The Levitical priest read twelve curses in which the people responded – Amen. No blesses where recorded.
Content – Once Israel crossed over the Jordan, they were to coat large stones with lime (or plaster as NLT reads) and write the commandments on them, which Moses gave. They were put these stones on Mount Ebal. This is the same mount where they were to bring their burnt and peace offerings.
Then twelve curses were read from the priest and the people response was in agreement that if one is found doing any of the acts they were to be cursed.
Application – God wants us to put up reminders of His commandments. We easily go our own way and reminders are necessary in order to remember what God’s will is. Daily reading of scripture is an obvious start. But I also feel that posting scripture throughout your home is part of this also.
