Setting – Moses provides more sundry laws. He lists laws of justice and fair weights, taken the wife of someone’s dead brother, etc.
Content – The wife of a dead brother is to be married by the live brother this so (v. 6), “…that his name may not be blotted out from Israel.” This was not a commandment, but a duty that was to be taken on.
The law of no more than 40 beatings and the law of not muzzling an ox whiles its threshing are listed in this chapter.
Equal weights for measurement were to be enforced. So (v. 15), “…that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.” By acting unjust is (v. 16), “…an abomination to the Lord your God.”
Also blotting out Amalek’s was to occur because of how they fought against Israel (v. 18), “…attached among you all the stragglers at your rear when you were faint and weary…” Once Israel was settled in the Promise Land they were to (v. 19), “blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven; you must not forget”.
Application – It’s easy to see that God establishes guidelines for His people to work within. God wanted the people to be just. In our lives we need to insure that we don’t accept short cuts because others do. God didn’t allow this for Israel; He won’t allow this for us. This is true for reporting true income on taxes, returning extra change from a store clerk, etc. In doing so God will bless us. And in doing so, we truly represent God. God is just and if we are a people of God we are to be just. Since God is an equitable God, we are to be equitable.
Bottom line is as Christians we represent God. So the question is, how is God represented in our lives?
