Deuteronomy 15 (Seven year release)

Setting – The seventh year was the year of releasing debts.

Content – Debt was absolved in the seventh year. They were allowed to lend to nations, but they were not to borrow from them. They were to rule other nations, but no one was to rule them.
Also God didn’t want them to avoid the poor among them. They were to give generously to their needy brother. The slave or maidservant was to be release in the seventh year and they were to send them away and furnish them liberally from their flock and wine vat. If the slave or maidservant didn’t want to leave, they were to pierce their ear and they will be their servants forever.
They were to consecrate the first-born male from their flock. They were not to work or shear the first-born. They were to eat it a year later. If it had a defect, then they weren’t to sacrifice it to the Lord. They could still eat it within the gates.

Application – God designed that debt would not go on forever. To bad we didn’t follow God’s leading in this still. This would prevent people from loaning to those who they felt were not able to pay back. Also, those that developed a situation that prevented them from paying back weren’t put in a position to be forever in debt.
God also instructed the people to take care of the poor and to freely provide for them. This was because God was going to bless them as a nation. And it makes sense; if God so blesses us we should then pass the blessing on to others.
