Setting – Moses recaps what the Lord has done against and for Israel. He also explains that following God will yield blessing on them and the land (crops and livestock) and not following Him will result in the land (crops) no longer being fruitful (because of no rain).
Content – Moses reminds them of the great things that they (Israel) saw; Red Sea engulfing Pharaoh’s army, ground swallowing up Dathan, Abiram and the sons of Eliab and Reuben.
Moses instructs Israel to diligently follow the commands that he gives and to write them on their heart and soul, doorposts of their house and their gates and to teach them to their children. If they follow them (v. 11), “so that your days and the days of your sons may be multiplied on the land which the LORD swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens {remain} above the earth”. Basically, Moses was (v. 26), “…setting before you today a blessing and a curse: (27) the blessing, if you listen to the commandments of the LORD your God, which I am commanding you today; (28) and the curse, if you do not listen to the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside from the way which I am commanding you today, by following other gods which you have not known.”
Moses once against states that they will be invincible (v. 24 & 25), “"Every place on which the sole of your foot treads shall be yours; your border will be from the wilderness to Lebanon, {and} from the river, the river Euphrates, as far as the western sea. (25) No man will be able to stand before you; the LORD your God will lay the dread of you and the fear of you on all the land on which you set foot, as He has spoken to you."
Application – Romans 8:13, “What then shall we say to these things? If God {is} for us, who {is} against us?” But God is against us if we are disobedient. We see that God continually reminds His people that He will bless them if they follow His commandments. Our modern day commandments (which is the Spirit of the law written on our hearts), is to avoid sin (this one is obvious), not forsaking the assembly of believers (Heb. 10:25), praying for our leaders, etc. It’s not an issue of sacrificing animals or libations, but of offering of us.
I want to dwell in a ‘land’ (which translate to my environment that I live in, work, family, sustenance, etc.) that is fruitful and that it is “well with me”. I need to pass to my children God’s New Testament commandments.
