Setting - The daughters of Zelophehad requested of Moses that their father (who is dead) have an inheritance. His daughters would possess this inheritance since Zelophehad didn’t have any sons.
Content - This was a bold request because the sons would have the inheritance passed down and not daughters. But God said that the daughters were correct in their request (v. 7). God further outlined the law of inheritance.
Application - We see that God is concerned with blessing Israel with land and how the inheritance is passed down. We know that God is more concerned about the heart and holiness of Israel and man, but He also blesses His people with earthly rewards (land to the tribes in this case).
The land represents a lot for the tribes; a place to settle and establish their families (no more traveling in the wilderness), something to pass down to their descendent's, and a fulfillment of God’s promise and more.
God has blessed me with earthly possessions, but they are from the hand of God and not of my doing. He has blessed me with income and circumstances to own items. I could thank God continually for each and every earthly thing that He allows me to enjoy. I do thank him often for the home that we get to be family in, sleep securely in and enjoy. I thank him for the cars that run well, running water (showers!), heat, and the list is pretty endless – so I need to thank Him that my list being endless.
I know that God is more concerned about the heart of the matter, but I’m thankful that He doesn’t ignore the earthly blessings as well.
