Setting - Joshua will be appointed leader because God has advised Moses that he will die after he views the promise land from mount Abarim.
Content - First Moses wasn’t able to go to the Promise Land because of his sin at Kadesh (striking, instead of speaking to the rock Num. 20:11,12). Secondly, Moses inquires of God to whom will succeed him as leader over Israel, God appoints Joshua.
Application - God sticks to His word. Even though Moses was faithful to God 99% of the time while in the wilderness, God still holds to the fact that Moses would not enter into the Promise Land. If God decided to overlook His sin we would understand, due to Moses continued faithfulness to God. But God stuck to His word.
Because of God’s commitment to His word, we can count on His blessing as well as His word to withhold blessing. Despite Israel’s continual sinning and abominations (Baal worshiping and practices) God remained committed to bringing Israel into the Promise Land. Grant it, He did remove a generation (which is another commitment He kept), but He remained faithful to bless Israel.
So there are two things that I see here. One, is that God blesses through our sin and two, that He doesn’t go back on His word.
