I'm first going to post, in bulk, the studies that I have already done.
Numbers 15:1-13
Setting - God giving instructions for when Israel enters the promise land; Canaan.
Content - God gave instructors regarding presenting the offerings while in Canaan.
Application - Am I following the instructions of the Bible as God provided? Do I rest as God instructed? And what is my daily sacrifice to God?
Numbers 15:14-31
Setting - God giving instructions for Israel regarding alien sojourners.
Content - Aliens are to follow the same law that was given to Israel.
Application - when someone sins unintentionally, once the sin is recognized, they are still to present a guilt offering to the Lord. We are still responsible for ourselves. We can’t assume that ‘since we didn’t know we don’t have to worry about it’. God still requires holiness from His people and once the Spirit reveals the unknown sin to us we are to repent and as for forgiveness.
Numbers 15:32-41
Setting - A man was caught gathering wood on the Sabbath.
Content - What judgment should be passed down on him and the Lord said that he should be killing by stoning. Since this directly followed the 14-31 where (verse 30), “But those who brazenly violate the Lord's will, whether native Israelites or foreigners, blaspheme the Lord, and they must be cut off from the community”. This should how serious God was about following His commandments.
Application - God doesn’t second-guess His statues. Verse 39 states it well, “The tassels will remind you of the commands of the Lord, and that you are to obey his commands instead of following your own desires and going your own ways, as you are prone to do”
Numbers 16
Setting - some people where complaining about Moses leadership, “lording it over them”
Content - Moses brought the issue to the Lord and let Him make the decision. They were complaining that Moses brought them out of Egypt to die in the wilderness (v. 14), “What's more, you haven't brought us into the land flowing with milk and honey or given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Are you trying to fool us? We will not come.”. But as Moses said (v. 11), “The one you are really revolting against is the Lord!” Korah, Abiram and Dathan were swallowed up by the earth, their tents and family.
Furthermore, God also consumed the other 250 men by fire who where in support or Korah.
Application - Stop complaining about ones circumstances. The Lord may have you there because of your complaining or of sin. Make sure that you are honoring the Lord in whatever situation that you are in. It’s not that the Lord doesn’t see or understand your circumstances, in fact, He sometimes puts us in them in order bring these issues/complaints before Him.
Numbers 17
Setting - God asking for the 12 tribes to bring a rod for each family, putting their name it. From that, God showing which man He chooses will sprout.
Content - We saw that Moses was chosen by God to be the leader in chapter 16, this was to show who the other chosen man was to be. Chapter 17:10(NLT), “And the Lord said to Moses: "Place Aaron's staff permanently before the Ark of the Covenant as a warning to rebels. This should put an end to their complaints against me and prevent any further deaths.”” This determined that Aaron was the chosen priest and should put an end to the rebellion from Israel. Israel rebelled because they didn’t like the circumstances and wanted to overthrow the leadership, which were Moses and Aaron.
Application - God has leaders in place for a reason. We can humbly and respectfully question them, but we are not in a place to rebel against them unless the Lord instructs us to.
