Hebrews 9 - Christ was the final sacrifice

Setting – Comparison of the earthly tabernacle and heavenly one and between animal atonement and Christ atonement

Content – The first covenant was (v. 1 NLT) “between God and Israel, there were regulations for worship and a sacred tent here on earth.” The tent had two rooms the inner room, which is the Holy of Holies where the Ark of the Covenant was and that outer room called the Holy Place. For the outer room (v. 6 NLT) “the priests went in and out of the first room regularly as they performed their religious duties”. But for the Holy of Holies (v. 7 NLT) “only the high priest goes into the Most Holy Place, and only once a year, and always with blood, which he offers to God to cover his own sins and the sins the people have committed in ignorance” This tent and regulations was (v. 9 NLT) “an illustration pointing to the present time” Because the (v. 10 NLT) “old system deals only with food and drink and ritual washing--external regulations that are in effect only until their limitations can be corrected”
Now under the new covenant (v. 11 NLT) “Christ has now become the High Priest over all the good things that have come. He has entered that great, perfect sanctuary in heaven, not made by human hands and not part of this created world.” His sacrifice was for (v. 11 NLT) “all time he took blood into that Most Holy Place, but not the blood of goats and calves. He took his own blood, and with it he secured our salvation forever” The old sacrifices dealt with (v. 10 NLT) “external regulations that are in effect only until their limitations can be corrected”, but under Christ sacrifice (v. 14 NLT) “will purify our hearts from deeds that lead to death so that we can worship the living God”
Verse 20 (NLT), “blood confirms the covenant God has made with you.” This was true of the old covenant (v. 22 NLT) “we can say that according to the Law of Moses, nearly everything was purified by sprinkling with blood” and of the new covenant (v. 14 NLT) “Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins” because (v. 22b NLT) “Without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sins”
Soon (v. 28 NLT) “He will come again but not to deal with our sins again. This time he will bring salvation to all those who are eagerly waiting for him.”

Application – Christ sacrifice was the fulfillment of example of the tabernacle tent, where the priest would offer sacrifices for himself and the people. Christ sacrifice was only needed once to atone for our sins (v. 26 NLT) “to remove the power of sin forever by his sacrificial death for us.” We see the affects of sin on the world. In order to remove its affects, shedding of blood is required; the blood of animals under the old covenant and of Christ under the new. Blood represents life and the shedding of it means death. The only way to remove the consequences of sin, which is death, is to pay for it with death. Both the animals in the old covenant and Christ in the new were innocent. Sin taints everything good that God created. Sins goal is to serve oneself (Self Interested Nature). Under God’s will, everyone serves one another.
We need to think of sin affecting others, not just a short term fulfillment of our vices. God visits the sins of the forefathers to each generation. We see that sin is like the ripples in a still lake after a pebble is thrown into the center.
