Setting – Christ is our priest forever according to the Melchizedek priesthood
Content – The writer shows how Melchizedek was positionally higher than Abraham (v. 4, 6-7 NLT) “Even Abraham, the great patriarch of Israel, recognized how great Melchizedek was by giving him a tenth of what he had taken in battle”, “Melchizedek placed a blessing upon Abraham, the one who had already received the promises of God”, “And without question, the person who has the power to bless is always greater than the person who is blessed”
Christ came from the line of Melchizedek (through Judah) and not from the line of Levi (v. 11b, 14, 17b NLT) “did God need to send a different priest from the line of Melchizedek, instead of from the line of Levi and Aaron”, “What I mean is, our Lord came from the tribe of Judah, and Moses never mentioned Judah in connection with the priesthood” & “You are a priest forever in the line of Melchizedek.”
Because of the weakness of the law to provide full atonement for salvation, Christ was sent to offer the final sacrifice for God’s people (v. 27 NLT) “He does not need to offer sacrifices every day like the other high priests. They did this for their own sins first and then for the sins of the people. But Jesus did this once for all when he sacrificed himself on the cross”
Application – Christ is a priest according the Melchizedek priesthood and not according to the Levitical priesthood. The Levitical priestly line ended at the death of Christ. The Melchizedek priesthood started before Abraham’s offspring (tribe of Levi) and continues after the completion of the Levitical priesthood in Christ. We know that Christ representation of us isn’t limited by the Levitical priestly line, (v. 3 NLT) “He remains a priest forever, resembling the Son of God” Christ is our representation before God.
