Habakkuk 2 - “Look at the proud”

Setting – God looks at the proud and advises of their end

Content – God wanted the message to Habakkuk to be known by all (v. 2 NLT) “Write my answer in large, clear letters on a tablet, so that a runner can read it and tell everyone else.” The plans that God has wouldn’t occur right away (v. 3b NLT) “If it seems slow, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed.” The proud trust in themselves but (v. 4b NLT) “the righteous will live by their faith.” The proud and arrogant (v. 5 NLT) “are never at rest”, “their mouths opened as wide as death”, “they are never satisfied” and “In their greed they have gathered up many nations and peoples”.
Judgment will come to them (v. 6 NLT) “At last justice has caught up with you! Now you will get what you deserve for your oppression and extortion!” They trusted in their wealth; (v. 9 NLT) “You believe your wealth will buy security, putting your families beyond the reach of danger” What will be the outcome of their efforts to acquire wealth, (v. 13 NLT) “Has not the LORD Almighty promised that the wealth of nations will turn to ashes? They work so hard, but all in vain!”
The focus wealth and pride on the earth will turn one day (v. 14 NLT) “For the time will come when all the earth will be filled, as the waters fill the sea, with an awareness of the glory of the LORD”. Then the proud and arrogant will (v. 16b NLT) “Drink from the cup of the LORD's judgment, and all your glory will be turned to shame” Their end (v. 17b NLT) “Now terror will strike you because of your murder and violence in cities everywhere!”
They will turn to their security (idols) (v. 18 NLT) “"What have you gained by worshiping all your man-made idols? How foolish to trust in something made by your own hands! What fools you are to believe such lies!”

Application – The proud and arrogant were to be judged during Habakkuk’s time. This will also occur at the judgment seat of Christ. All will account for their ways. The proud and arrogant will be humbled. We need to leave the vengeance to the Lord (Hebrews 10:30) “or we know Him who said, VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY." And again, "THE LORD WILL JUDGE HIS PEOPLE.”
We need to be a humble people, knowing who God is and what He can do. If we step back, all that exists and all that we are is only because He put it into existence and only because He keeps it in existence.
