Setting – Proverbial comparisons are given
Content – Death refocuses our purpose (v. 2 NLT) “It is better to spend your time at funerals than at festivals. For you are going to die, and you should think about it while there is still time.” Death has us think about our life. Wise people think about death, (v. 4 NLT) “A wise person thinks much about death, while the fool thinks only about having a good time now.” Death coupled with wisdom realigns us to what we should be doing.
Regarding wisdom, (v. 11 NLT) “Being wise is as good as being rich; in fact, it is better.” because, (v. 12 NLT) “Wisdom or money can get you almost anything, but it's important to know that only wisdom can save your life.” And (v. 19 NLT) “A wise person is stronger than the ten leading citizens of a town!”
But (v. 29 NLT) “I discovered that God created people to be upright, but they have each turned to follow their own downward path.” Each person must decide on their direction in life, their path to follow.
We need to take the good with the bad (v. 14 NLT) “Enjoy prosperity while you can. But when hard times strike, realize that both come from God. That way you will realize that nothing is certain in this life.” Good and bad, each has its purpose.
Application – Death should teach us about how we should live. Thinking about the end of your life can make you reevaluate your current path. While in this life we should obtain wisdom because, “it's important to know that only wisdom can save your life”
There will be good and bad times in life and each carry a purpose. We can enjoy the cool breeze in the summer and the warm sun in the winter. We seem to have a refreshed enjoyment of the smaller blessings after experiencing the really bad. In all things wisdom helps us because it teaches us that there is purpose in trials and to enjoy all blessings we have.
