Judges 18 - He remains faithful to the faithless

Setting – The tribe of Dan conquered Laish and took Micah’s idols and his Levitical priest.

Content – The tribe of Dan didn’t receive their possession of land yet. Five men from the tribe sought and found the land of Liash, which was peaceful and secure. This was an easy land to conquer because (v. 7b NLT), “…And they lived a great distance from Sidon and had no allies nearby.”
The five men came to Micah’s house finding the young Levite priest there. He said that (v. 6 NLT), “…the LORD will go ahead of you on your journey.”
Now with the warriors of Dan with them to conquer Laish (v. 17), “…the five spies entered the shrine and took the carved image, the sacred ephod, the household idols, and the cast idol.” from Micah’s house. In addition, they asked the Levite priest to join them (v. 20), “The young priest was quite happy to go with them, so he took along the sacred ephod, the household idols, and the carved image.”
Dan completely conquered and burned the town to the ground. They rebuilt the town and lived there. Verse 29, “They renamed the town Dan after their ancestor, Israel's son, but it had originally been called Laish.”
But (v. 30-31), “Then they set up the carved image, and they appointed Jonathan son of Gershom, a descendant of Moses, as their priest. This family continued as priests for the tribe of Dan until the Exile. So Micah's carved image was worshiped by the tribe of Dan as long as the Tabernacle of God remained at Shiloh.”

Application – We see that God is still fulfilling his promise to Israel to possess the land. Even in the midst of convoluted ways the people were trying to honor God, God still was committed to His promise.
We see this time and time again, where God if faithful even though we are not. The verse in 2 Timothy 2:13 rings clear, “If we are faithless, He remains faithful; for He cannot deny Himself”
I know that I am endlessly thankful that God remains true to His word. When God has full right to call off His side of the commitment, He doesn’t. Because of His commitment, I will enter heaven and live forever with Him. What a great God we have.
