Setting – Israel wins all of the victories they fought. God also suspends the day, stopping the sun from setting so that Israel avenged themselves of their enemies.
Content – The five kings of the Amorites gathered together to fit against Gibeon. Israel joined forces and defeated them. God sent stones (possibly hailstones) to kill those that were fleeing (v. 11b), “…the LORD threw large stones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died; {there were} more who died from the hailstones than those whom the sons of Israel killed with the sword.”
Joshua spoke to the Lord asking for the sun not to set and God honored the request (v. 14), “There was no day like that before it or after it, when the LORD listened to the voice of a man; for the LORD fought for Israel.”
Joshua also conquered Makkedah, Libnah, Lachish (and Horam king of Gezer who helped at Lachish), Eglon, Hebron and Debir, (v. 40b), “…He left no survivor, but he utterly destroyed all who breathed, just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded.” (v. 42), “Joshua captured all these kings and their lands at one time, because the LORD, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.”
Application – God led Israel to victory. They won every battle and Joshua followed the Lord command to utterly destroy the cities and left no survivor. God was with Israel because they followed His commandments, unlike what they did with Achan.
If we are following God wholeheartedly, God will win the battle for us. We need to be strong and courageous when fitting our battles. Battles come in different varieties. Battles against sin, against others, against circumstances, but in all cases, we need to request that the Lord helps us in our effort. We need to be following God’s commandments and not have a broken relationship with Him.
