Joshua 4 - Set up object reminders

Setting – Israel crosses the Jordan. Twelve men, one from each tribe, took twelve stones from the river and Joshua set them up at Gigal. Joshua also set up twelve stones in the middle of the river.

Content – The twelve stones where a sign (v. 6, 7), "Let this be a sign among you, so that when your children ask later, saying, 'What do these stones mean to you?’ then you shall say to them, 'Because the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off.' So these stones shall become a memorial to the sons of Israel forever."
After Joshua set up his stones in the middle of the Jordan and the other twelve stones were removed from the Jordan, the priest exited the Jordan and the waters returned to over fill their banks. Israel crossed during a time when the Jordan was overflowing its banks, which it does every year.

Application – God has Israel cross the Jordan at the height of its flow. Additionally, stones where setup for a reminder of what God did again for Israel.
We need to have memorials setup for reminders of what God does in our lives. The house we move to is a good reminder, but something additional, such as bench, birdfeeder, picture on a wall, etc. Any event such, child being born, or graduting from high school/college, getting married, 10, 20-years of marriage, etc. are something that we can thank God about. Also these object reminders are something that our children will know the meaning of and maybe passed down to them. The idea is when we, or our children or others, look at it, it has a story to tell and to remind us about God.
