Setting – Rahab hid the two spies. Rehab asked for her and her family to be spared from Israel overtaking them.
Content – Rahad states how the inhabitants of Jericho know the Lord has given their land to Israel (v. 9), “…I know that the LORD has given you the land…” She continues and reviews to the spies what God did for Israel, parting of the Red Sea and victory of Or and at Sihon. She had the spies swear for the safety of her and her family, which they agreed to; she needed to hang a cord of scarlet from her window.
The spies reported to Joshua (v. 24) "Surely the LORD has given all the land into our hands; moreover, all the inhabitants of the land have melted away before us."
Application – God provided more supporting information to the spies insuring that the victory was Israel’s. Rehab provided information about how the inhabitants of Jericho where in fear of Israel. God had already told Israel that they would own this land. I suspect that Joshua sent the spies for information on land and topography. While there, they found that God provided additional encouragement about them taking over the land.
God seems to provide continual information regarding His promises. He’s never short on reminding us of who He is and what He promised, such as, “If you follow My commandments, you will be blessed”.
