Deuteronomy 30 - Follow God to be blessed, reject God to be cursed

Setting – Moses states how God will restore Israel when they are captives in other nations. He also states how he outlined before them life (blessings) and death (curses), that is, to following or not to follow God’s commandments.

Content
– Interesting that Moses seems to be prophesying about Israel having to be restored, (v. 1), “…and you call {them} to mind in all nations where the LORD your God has banished you…” & (v. 3), “…then the LORD your God will restore you from captivity…”
Once Israel returns (v. 5), “The LORD your God will bring you into the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it; and He will prosper you and multiply you more than your fathers…” Then Israel (v. 8), “you shall again obey the LORD, and observe all His commandments which I command you today” Then once again the Lord will bless them.
Moses also states that the commands (v. 11), “For this commandment which I command you today is not too difficult for you, nor is it out of reach”
Moses also explains (v. 15), “See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, and death and adversity” Basically, blessing and life are with following the law, death and adversity by not.

Application
– I want to be blessed by God. I get blessed (v. 20) “…by loving the LORD your God, by obeying His voice, and by holding fast to Him; for this is your life and the length of your days…” Jesus states (Matthew 11:29-30) “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” God’s ways are not burdensome. We find them to be because we need to forsake our own will and take on God’s and we don’t like to deny ourselves. But I greatly desire God’s blessing and find that His yoke is light and rewarding. Knowing the truth does set me free. I experience freedom when I don’t sin.
