Setting - Moses recaps how God provided for Israel while going through the wilderness.
Content - Moses reminds Israel how it was God who provided food (manna), water and it’s God who brought them to the Promised Land. Moses also warns them to not forget God when they become prosperous.
God also tested their hearts (v. 16b). "...that He might humble you and that He might test you, to do good for you in the end"
Application - Verse 17 sums it up well, "Otherwise, you may say in your heart, 'My power and the strength of my hand made me this wealth.' It was God who brought them out of Egypt. It was God who provided water and food when they needed, He that went before them to win the war, etc.
It’s God who keeps the earth spinning, the earth sustaining life, it’s God who provided Christ as the complete sacrifice, etc. The thing that I contribute (factiously speaking) to this equation is sin. But with God He can make this debilitated individual into a child of God and a vessel of honor. It doesn’t take a long time of reflection to quickly realize that everything that we have in life is from God. Each day is a new gift from Him. Basically, our existence is a gift from Him. Even better, our eternal life is a gift from Him.
Just like Moses reminded Israel of who did what for them (that is, God did everything), it’s a great daily reminder that it’s God who does everything for us.
Another thing that God does is to test our hearts. This is a way for God to show us what we are or aren’t made of. Just like Joseph tested his brothers when he accused Benjamin of stealing the cup in order to see if they’d stand up for Benjamin or not. God allows trials/testing in our life in order to refine us. We know that He does this because He loves us and wants to makes us what He designed us to be.
