Deuteronomy 12 (Our soul, God’s new Promise Land)

Setting – Moses is telling Israel that when they enter the Promise Land that they first destroy all places that had idols along with the idols. Also they are to bring their offerings to the specific place that the Lord designates.

Content – Israel is to destroy everything related to the nation that they are dispossessing. Nothing is to remain. In fact, they aren’t even to inquire (v. 30), “…and that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, 'How do these nations serve their gods, that I also may do likewise?'” The nations abominations were great (v. 31), “…for every abominable act which the LORD hates they have done for their gods; for they even burn their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods.”
They are allowed to eat meat within the gates, but they are not allowed to eat the blood (v. 21), “…and you may eat within your gates whatever you desire.” (v. 23), “Only be sure not to eat the blood, for the blood is the life, and you shall not eat the life with the flesh”
Moses once again reminds them (v. 32), “Whatever I command you, you shall be careful to do; you shall not add to nor take away from it.”

Application – Our ‘Promise Land’ is our lives. God dwelt with Israel, God dwells in Christians (believers). God wants every abomination removed from our presence. God wanted His promise land to be free from idols so He wants our soul, which He indwells, to be free from idols as well.
